THANK OUR ARMED FORCES & PREPARE FOR OUR SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL

As we remember VE Day coming up on May 8th and as we approach Memorial Day, I am also reminded that 4th of July is right around the corner.  These are holidays that deserve our attention and respect.

VE Day, of course, celebrates the end of WWII in Europe.  This year marks the 80th anniversary and in the UK in particular, celebrations are planned.

Here in the US, Memorial Day was first observed on May 30,1868, when it was known as Decoration Day. It wasn’t until 1968 that Congress changed the the observance to the last Monday in May and in 1971 standardized its name as Memorial Day.

It is a day for honoring and mourning military personnel who died in the line of duty. It is a day for visiting cemeteries and memorials and flying flags (fly at half staff from sunrise to noon). At 3pm local time observe the national moment of silent remembrance.  Wear a poppy.

Armed Forces Day, an unofficial US holiday for honoring those currently serving in the armed forces, is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in May. (Veterans Day, on November 11th, honors those who have previously served in the US armed forces).

Then, before Independence Day, we have two other holidays for flag flying—Flag Day on June 14th and Juneteenth on June 19th.

4th of July is a time for celebration. Communities come together, fireworks displays, picnics and parties. Next year, 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States. Celebrate this year then get ready for the big party next year, The US Government has already issued licensed flag designs, The America 250. As you celebrate this year get ahead of the game and start planning for next year’s 250th celebration. Visit Americas 250th Annual Celebration website america250.org to learn more.

FYI—the official America 250 licensed flag designs are being made in the USA by the oldest and largest US flagmaker. They have been making flags since 1847!  To get your official licensed America 250 flag contact us today!
